Prop Firm Weekend Holding Rules: Gap Risk and Who Allows It

Markets close for two days and reopen wherever the news left them. Your stop is not in the market during that gap, which is why this rule exists and why it varies so much between firms and products.

Short answer

Whether you may hold over the weekend depends on the firm, the product and often the phase. Many forex evaluations allow it; futures programs and instant-funding products frequently do not. The reason is gap risk: over a closed weekend your stop is not in the market, so a Monday reopen beyond it fills at the new price, not your level.

Weekend holding, firm by firm

Read live from our own prop-firm compliance data — the same source as the comparison tool. “Verify” means we could not confirm that rule from the firm's own current terms, so we do not publish a number.

About these firm rules. We are independent: not affiliated with, endorsed by or paid by any prop firm, and nothing here ranks or recommends one. Firm rules change often and differ between programs, so the firm's own current terms are the only authority. Anything shown as “Verify” is a rule we could not confirm from those terms, and we publish that rather than a number we guessed.
About this calculator. The result is an educational estimate. Contract sizes, pip values, spreads, commissions and overnight financing differ by broker and by instrument, and fills can differ from the prices you model. Check your own account's specification before trading.

What the gap actually does

A stop rests in the market; over a closed weekend there is no market. If price reopens beyond your stop, the fill is at the new price, not your level. On a leveraged account that single mechanic can produce a loss several times the planned risk, breaching a daily limit or a drawdown floor before you can react.

If your account allows it

  1. Size the position for a gap, not for your stop: assume a worse fill than your level.
  2. Check the week ahead for scheduled events that land near the open.
  3. Know exactly when your firm's "weekend" starts - the cut-off is usually before the market's own close.
  4. Account for the triple-swap charge on holds that span the rollover - the swap calculator shows the cost.

Our table

Below is what our compliance configuration holds for each firm, from the comparison tool. Where a firm's own current terms did not confirm the rule we show Verify. Nothing here is a recommendation, and programs differ within a firm.

Frequently asked questions

Can you hold trades over the weekend on a prop account?

It depends on the firm, the product and often the phase. Many forex evaluations allow it; futures programs and instant-funding products frequently do not.

Why do prop firms restrict weekend holding?

Weekend gaps can move price past a stop with no market in between, producing losses far larger than planned across many accounts at once.

Does the rule change once I am funded?

At several firms, yes. A rule that applied during the evaluation is not automatically the rule on the funded account.

What happens if I break it?

Usually the position is closed and the account is failed or penalised, depending on the firm's own terms.
