Prop Firm EA and Algo Rules: Allowed Is Not the Same as Unrestricted

Most firms permit automated trading. Almost none permit it without conditions, and the conditions - not the permission - are what accounts are failed on.

Short answer

Most firms allow you to run your own automation on your own account under the same risk rules as manual trading. Allowed rarely means unrestricted: latency and tick-scalping exploits, high-frequency behaviour, copied external signals and identical fills across accounts are commonly prohibited. A bot built without a daily loss limit usually breaches one in its first week.

EA / algorithmic trading, firm by firm

Read live from our own prop-firm compliance data — the same source as the comparison tool. “Verify” means we could not confirm that rule from the firm's own current terms, so we do not publish a number. Allowed here means the firm permits automation in principle; the conditions are in its own terms.

About these firm rules. We are independent: not affiliated with, endorsed by or paid by any prop firm, and nothing here ranks or recommends one. Firm rules change often and differ between programs, so the firm's own current terms are the only authority. Anything shown as “Verify” is a rule we could not confirm from those terms, and we publish that rather than a number we guessed.

What "EAs allowed" usually means

It usually means you may run your own automation on your own account, under the same risk rules as manual trading. It usually does not mean any of these are fine:

The practical problem nobody mentions

A strategy tuned on a retail account with high leverage and no daily loss limit will breach a prop account quickly, because the constraint changed even though the code did not. Before connecting anything, re-test it against the account's actual rules: the daily limit, the drawdown type, and the leverage cap. The backtesting guide covers doing that without fooling yourself.

Questions worth asking before you buy an account

  1. Are EAs allowed in the evaluation, the funded phase, or both?
  2. Is there a minimum hold time, a maximum trade count, or a ban on specific techniques?
  3. May the same strategy run on several of my own accounts?
  4. What happens if the rule is broken - warning, failed account, or withheld payout?

Get the answers in writing from the firm. The table below shows what we could confirm from each firm's own terms, with Verify where we could not.

Frequently asked questions

Do prop firms allow EAs?

Most allow you to run your own automation on your own account, subject to conditions. The conditions vary by firm and sometimes by phase.

What kinds of bots get banned?

Latency and tick-scalping exploits, high-frequency behaviour, copied external signals and anything that looks like coordinated group trading.

Can I run the same EA on several accounts?

Often yes across your own accounts, but identical fills across accounts are exactly what monitoring looks for. Check the firm's wording first.

Why did my profitable EA fail the account?

Usually because a strategy built without a daily loss limit or a trailing drawdown breaches one of them, not because the logic was wrong.
