A pip is the standard unit forex prices move in. Knowing what a pip is worth for your position size is the first step to knowing how much a trade can cost you.
A pip is the fourth decimal place for most currency pairs (0.0001) and the second for yen pairs (0.01). One standard lot of 100,000 units is worth about $10 per pip on EUR/USD, a mini lot about $1 and a micro lot about $0.10.

It is a tool for your process, not a signal service and not a promise of results. The preview runs real market data with one indicator at a time - nothing is saved and no broker is connected. A preview of the product, not advice.
See what the desk does →Pip stands for "percentage in point" (sometimes "price interest point"). For most currency pairs a pip is the fourth decimal place: when EUR/USD moves from 1.1000 to 1.1001, that's one pip. For pairs that include the Japanese yen, a pip is the second decimal place: USD/JPY moving from 148.00 to 148.01 is one pip.
| Pair type | Example | One pip |
|---|---|---|
| Most pairs | EUR/USD 1.1000 → 1.1001 | 0.0001 |
| JPY pairs | USD/JPY 148.00 → 148.01 | 0.01 |
| Gold (typical) | XAU/USD 2400.0 → 2400.1 | 0.10 |
Most brokers quote an extra decimal, the pipette (a tenth of a pip). EUR/USD at 1.10005 has a fifth digit: that last 5 is half a pip. When a platform shows "points", check whether it means pips or pipettes; ten points is often one pip.

It's also why the same 25-pip stop can cost very different amounts on different pairs, and why position size, not the stop distance, should change from trade to trade.
The spread (the gap between buy and sell prices) is also measured in pips. A 1-pip spread on one standard lot of EUR/USD costs about $10 the moment you enter. Our beginner guide explains spreads, leverage and margin in more detail.
On one standard lot of EUR/USD, GBP/USD or any pair quoted in USD, one pip is worth about $10. On a mini lot it's about $1, and on a micro lot about $0.10. JPY pairs and crosses differ and depend on the exchange rate.
50 pips. For most pairs subtract the prices and divide by 0.0001; for JPY pairs divide by 0.01.
A pipette is one tenth of a pip, the fifth decimal on most pairs (third on JPY pairs). Many brokers quote prices to pipette precision.
The yen is worth far less per unit than most currencies, so JPY pairs are quoted with two decimals and one pip is 0.01 instead of 0.0001.
