Best Forex Indicators Explained: What Each One Actually Tells You

Indicators are formulas applied to price. None of them predicts the future, but each measures something specific. Understanding what they measure is what makes them useful.

Short answer

Indicators are formulas applied to price: moving averages for trend, RSI and MACD for momentum, Bollinger Bands and ATR for volatility. Each measures one thing, and all of them lag because they are built from candles that have already closed. Use one or two that measure different things.

Moving averages (trend)

A moving average smooths price over a number of periods. The simple MA weights all periods equally; the exponential MA (EMA) weights recent prices more. Traders use them to judge trend direction (price above a rising MA), and as dynamic support or resistance. Limitation: they lag, and they whipsaw in ranges.

RSI (momentum)

The Relative Strength Index measures the speed of recent gains versus losses on a 0 to 100 scale. Readings above 70 are called "overbought" and below 30 "oversold". Limitation: in strong trends RSI can stay overbought for a long time, so it's not a sell signal by itself. Many traders watch for divergence instead, where price makes a new high but RSI doesn't.

MACD (momentum and trend)

MACD is the difference between two EMAs (commonly 12 and 26 periods) plotted with a signal line (a 9-period EMA of MACD). Crosses and the histogram show momentum shifting. Limitation: built from moving averages, so it lags too.

Bollinger Bands (volatility)

A moving average with bands a set number of standard deviations above and below. Narrow bands mean low volatility (often before a bigger move); wide bands mean high volatility. Limitation: touching a band is not a reversal signal by itself.

ATR (volatility for stops)

Average True Range measures how much a market typically moves per candle. It doesn't show direction, but it's one of the most practical tools for placing stops that aren't too tight for current conditions, and for sizing positions.

Volume

Spot forex has no central exchange, so there's no single true volume figure; platforms show tick volume (the number of price changes), which is a rough proxy for activity. Futures markets do report real traded volume.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most accurate forex indicator?

No indicator is accurate on its own. Each measures one thing (trend, momentum, volatility), and works best as context alongside price structure.

How many indicators should I use?

Most traders are better served by one or two that measure different things, such as a moving average for trend and ATR for volatility, rather than many that overlap.

Is RSI good for forex?

RSI is widely used to gauge momentum and spot divergence, but overbought and oversold readings are not reliable reversal signals in strong trends.

Do professional traders use indicators?

Many do, mostly for context such as trend, volatility and levels, rather than as automatic buy or sell signals.
