AUD/USD: Live Rate, Pip Value and the China Connection

The Australian dollar trades as a proxy for Chinese growth and industrial commodity demand. That is what separates it from the European pairs: its biggest scheduled risks are often not Australian at all.

Short answer

AUD/USD is the Australian dollar priced in US dollars, with a pip of 0.0001 worth $10 per standard lot. It behaves as a risk-sensitive, commodity-linked currency: Chinese growth data and iron ore demand move it as much as Reserve Bank of Australia policy, and it is most active in the Asian session.

Pip value and the size your stop allows

One pip = 0.0001 of price. A standard lot is 100,000 Australian dollars, so pip value = pip size × contract size × lots. Figures assume a USD account; confirm the contract size with your broker.

What actually drives it

Session behaviour

This is a genuinely Asian-session pair: Sydney and Tokyo hours carry real flow, Chinese data lands in that window, and by the time London arrives the day's story is often already set. That makes it one of the few majors that suits traders in Asian time zones.

Correlations worth knowing

AUD/USD and NZD/USD move together closely enough that holding both is close to holding one position twice. The same goes, to a lesser degree, for AUD and copper or iron ore. If you trade several at once, the risk of ruin calculator is the honest way to see what your real exposure is.
